Australian Super FAQ — Common Retirement Planning Questions
Common questions about the calculator and how it works.
General Questions About the Calculator
Is Retirement Runway Calculator accurate?
Simple answer: not really. The way we use past data to predict the future is often called technical analysis.
It sounds very sensible, but a classic example of its limits comes from The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb: a turkey figures out it gets food every morning and uses past data to conclude this will continue forever — until the last day. Nobody can say future predictions are 100% accurate. This is one way we estimate the future, but certainty simply isn't possible.
Why does super return only have about 10 years of history?
The Australian government did not collect this data before that time.

Using the Calculator — Super, Savings & Returns
I have both savings and super. How should I use the calculator?
Whether it is super or savings, both are principal earning a return. You can combine them using Your Own Invest Return (%).
For example, if half your money is in a savings account (3.23% average) and half in super (7.73% average), use the midpoint:
- (3.23 + 7.73) ÷ 2 = 5.48%
Enter 5.48% for Your Own Invest Return (%).
Can I print the result?
Go to your browser's File menu, choose Print, then save to a PDF file on your computer.
